Wed Dec 04 07:45:50 UTC 2024: ## Telangana Hit by Moderate Earthquake, Tremors Felt Across Region

**Hyderabad, December 4, 2024** – A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Medaram in Telangana’s Mulugu district this morning at 7:27 AM IST. Tremors were felt as far as 200 kilometers away, including parts of Hyderabad and surrounding districts.

According to the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), this is the second largest earthquake recorded in the region in the last 55 years. The largest, a 5.7 magnitude quake, occurred in Bhadrachalam in 1969. While NGRI Director Prakash Kumar confirmed the event, he reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm, classifying the earthquake as “moderate.” He attributed the tremors felt over a wide area to the density and composition of the rock formations.

Kumar explained that such seismic activity is typical for the Godavari Rift Basin, a known fault zone with numerous fractures along the Godavari and Krishna rivers. The NGRI, established in 1961, continuously monitors seismic activity in the region using a network of seismometers. All stations, including the one at the institute, recorded the earthquake in real-time. The director emphasized the ongoing research into earthquake hazards and other geological aspects within the basin.
