**BEIRUT, December 4, 2024** – Syrian opposition fighters, including those affiliated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and Turkish-backed groups, have made significant gains in the ongoing conflict, capturing four towns near the strategically important city of Hama. This brings the insurgents to within 10 kilometers of Hama, Syria’s fourth-largest city.
The captured towns – Halfaya, Taybat al-Imam, Maardis, and Soran – were seized in a major offensive that has also seen insurgents capture territory in Aleppo and Idlib provinces over the past few days. The insurgents’ military operations administration claims 50 government soldiers were killed during the operation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, confirmed the towns’ capture.
While insurgents celebrated their victories, Syrian government forces reported recapturing the village of Khanaser, which sits on a key road to Aleppo, after losing it earlier. Intense clashes continue, with both sides utilizing artillery and airstrikes. Syrian state media reported intense airstrikes by Syrian and Russian air forces.
Further east, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) claimed to have captured seven villages from pro-government fighters, a claim denied by Syrian state media. These villages are near a U.S. military base.
The escalating conflict prompted Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to call for reconciliation between President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition. Assad’s government, however, continues to label all armed opposition groups as terrorists and refuses any political negotiation. Turkey’s push for normalization with Syria is linked to addressing security threats from Kurdish militants and the return of Syrian refugees. Assad has conditioned normalization on Turkey’s withdrawal of its troops from northern Syria. The thirteen-year-long Syrian civil war has claimed an estimated half-million lives.
