**New York, December 4, 2024** – India voted in favor of two key United Nations General Assembly resolutions demanding Israel’s withdrawal from occupied Palestinian and Syrian territories. The resolutions, overwhelmingly adopted on Tuesday, call for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the region based on pre-1967 borders.
The first resolution, concerning the Palestinian territories, passed with 157 votes in favor, 8 against, and 7 abstentions. It specifically demanded Israel’s withdrawal from all Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and an end to settlement activities. The resolution reiterated support for the two-state solution and condemned Israeli actions violating international law.
A second resolution, focusing on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, passed with 97 votes in favor, 64 abstentions, and 8 votes against. This resolution declared Israel’s 1981 annexation of the Golan Heights null and void and urged Israel’s complete withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders. It also condemned continued Israeli settlement construction in the area.
India’s support for both resolutions marks a significant stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the ongoing occupation of Syrian territory. While the resolutions lack the power of legally binding Security Council resolutions, they represent a strong condemnation of Israeli actions by a significant portion of the international community. The United States, along with several other countries, voted against both resolutions.
