**Amritsar, Punjab –** A former Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist, Narain Singh Chaura, opened fire on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar today. Badal, serving a mandated guard duty as penance for past government actions, was unharmed thanks to the quick response of temple officials who overpowered the shooter.
Chaura, a wheelchair-bound Khalistani activist with a history of violence including involvement in the 2004 Burail jailbreak, reportedly smuggled weapons into Punjab after fleeing to Pakistan in 1984. He was apprehended at the scene with a 9mm pistol, raising suspicions of a Pakistani connection. While authorities deem the attack a lone-wolf incident, a full investigation is underway.
The attack, which occurred a day after Badal began his temple service, has ignited a political firestorm. The Akali Dal is demanding a judicial inquiry, alleging a conspiracy to destabilize Punjab, while the Congress blamed the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for lax security. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while condemning the attack, lauded the police’s swift action in preventing a larger incident and arresting Chaura. The incident has raised serious questions about security at one of Sikhism’s holiest sites and sparked intense debate about the state of law and order in Punjab.
