**EDISON, NJ** – In a dramatic turn of events, a senior citizen initially believed to have perished in a devastating multi-alarm fire at an Edison housing complex is now alive, though in critical condition. Mayor Sam Joshi announced the update, adding that a second resident is also critically injured following the blaze Tuesday evening at the Inman Grove senior complex on Inman and Grove Avenues.
The fire, reported shortly after 6 p.m., engulfed several floors of the complex, forcing the evacuation of numerous residents. At least two wings of the building are uninhabitable due to intense smoke damage. Mayor Joshi has secured 100 hotel rooms to temporarily house displaced seniors, utilizing the township’s emergency trust fund.
The response was massive, involving 18 engines, four truck companies, two rescue units, two air units, and 97 firefighters from Edison, Metuchen, and South Brunswick, along with the Middlesex County Fire Marshal, the Red Cross, and the state Office of Emergency Management. Governor Phil Murphy has also offered assistance.
Police urge residents to avoid the area. The Inman Grove complex, featuring multiple five-story buildings with over 100 apartments, offers a range of amenities for its residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
