**Mumbai, December 4, 2024** – Devendra Fadnavis is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a third term, following the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s decisive victory in the recent state elections. Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan invited the alliance to form the government on December 5th after Fadnavis was unanimously elected as the BJP Legislature Party Leader earlier in the day.
The Mahayuti coalition, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), submitted a letter of support to the Governor, securing a comfortable majority of 230 seats in the 288-member Assembly. The BJP alone won a record 132 seats.
Fadnavis expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity, emphasizing the immense responsibility that comes with leading the state. He highlighted the BJP’s strong mandate as a reflection of the people’s dissatisfaction with the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
The swearing-in ceremony, a grand event expected to draw over 40,000 supporters and numerous dignitaries including Prime Minister Modi and several Chief Ministers, will be held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.
Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the BJP’s victory as a significant step towards a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India), attributing it to the electorate’s desire for stability and progress. She confidently declared the party’s intention to make Maharashtra the number one state in the country. The event is being hailed as a “historic moment” for Maharashtra.
