Mon Dec 02 19:32:08 UTC 2024: ## Chennai NGO’s Youth Mental Health Programs Praised by UNICEF

**Chennai, December 3, 2024** – The Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) in Chennai has received international recognition for its innovative youth mental health programs. Two of SCARF’s initiatives, the Prevention and Early Intervention for Psychosis (PEPP) program and the Resource Centre for Youth Mental Health Services (rYMs), have been highlighted in a UNICEF document on the mental health of children and young people.

UNICEF’s report favorably compares SCARF’s PEPP program to a similar program in Canada, noting a significantly lower dropout rate among young people with first-episode psychosis in Chennai. R. Thara, SCARF’s vice-chairman, attributed this success to early intervention and the development of strong therapeutic relationships between young people and mental health professionals. The PEPP clinic, the first of its kind in India, focuses on addressing psychosis in its early stages, preventing it from becoming chronic.

SCARF’s rYMs program, spearheaded by consultant psychiatrist Dr. Shiva Prakash Srinivasan, aims to destigmatize mental health and create safe spaces for youth. The program involves establishing community centers and engaging young people in conversations about mental health, offering support and referring them to appropriate services when needed. It also incorporates life skills training within childcare institutions. The long-term goal is to integrate mental health support within community settings, shifting the focus from addressing mental health issues to fostering overall well-being. The program plans to expand its reach to colleges and community centers across the city.
