Mon Dec 02 17:11:11 UTC 2024: ## Taiwan President’s Call with Pelosi Sparks China’s Ire

**Honolulu, Hawaii –** Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s phone conversation with former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday has ignited fresh tensions with China. The 20-minute call, described as “warm and amicable” by Taiwanese officials, focused on China’s escalating military threats towards Taiwan.

Pelosi’s long-standing support for Taiwan has consistently angered Beijing, who responded to her 2022 visit to Taipei with large-scale military exercises. President Lai’s stopover in Hawaii, where he received a warm welcome, further fueled China’s ire. The conversation with Pelosi, according to Presidential spokeswoman Karen Kuo, centered on these increasing military threats.

China reacted swiftly, urging the U.S. to halt its involvement in Taiwan affairs and cease support for “Taiwan independence separatist forces.” This latest incident follows recent U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, further escalating the already strained relationship between the mainland and the island nation.
