**DOHA, QATAR** – Red Bull’s Sergio Perez has clarified his slow start from the pit lane during Saturday’s Formula 1 Qatar Sprint race, revealing a deliberate strategy to gain clear track for Sunday’s main event. Perez, who started from the pit lane after Sprint Qualifying setbacks and subsequent car setup changes, remained stationary for several seconds after the pit exit lights turned green. This resulted in Williams driver Franco Colapinto overtaking him.
Team principal Christian Horner initially expressed surprise, suggesting Perez had been “caught napping.” However, Perez explained that the delay was intentional. “We wanted a big gap,” he stated, emphasizing that the team aimed to avoid battling for positions and instead prioritized clean air for optimal data gathering and race preparation. He acknowledged the inconvenience of being overtaken by Colapinto but stressed the importance of the strategy.
Red Bull confirmed that the Sprint was treated as a test session, allowing them to gather valuable data with Perez unlikely to score points. Perez himself supported this approach, citing the limited points on offer in the Sprint and the focus on Sunday’s main race.
Despite the unusual start, the strategy appears to have paid off. Perez qualified within the top 10 for Sunday’s Grand Prix. While acknowledging Verstappen’s more aggressive setup approach, he expressed confidence in improved car balance for the main race. Verstappen, meanwhile, will start second after a grid penalty. Red Bull remains cautious, however, about translating their qualifying pace into race performance.
