**Chennai, December 3, 2024** – Chennai’s 871 parks reopened today following a massive cleanup operation in the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal and heavy rainfall. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) reported removing nearly 8,000 tons of waste, including garbage and debris, across the city’s 15 zones. Over 9,000 sanitation workers were deployed, clearing 3,942 metric tons of garbage and 255 tons of construction debris on December 1st alone. An additional 3,680 tons were removed by December 2nd. Fallen trees and branches were also cleared using specialized equipment.
The intensive cleaning effort also included the operation of 192 special rain-season medical camps, providing treatment to over 10,000 people for common seasonal illnesses. The camps offered medical care and distributed ‘Nilavembu’ (Neem) drinking water. The parks, closed as a precautionary measure during the cyclone and heavy rains, are now open to the public.
