Mon Dec 02 17:23:05 UTC 2024: ## Baby Boom Continues in South Korea: Birthrate Surges for Third Consecutive Month

**Seoul, South Korea** – South Korea is experiencing a sustained rise in its birthrate, with September marking the third consecutive month exceeding 20,000 newborns. Statistics Korea announced on November 27th that 20,590 babies were born in September, a 10.1% increase compared to the same month last year. This follows similar increases in July (20,601) and August (20,098).

The third-quarter total reached an impressive 61,288 births, an 8% increase (4,523 more babies) compared to the same period in 2022 – the largest quarterly jump since 2012. This surge has pushed the total fertility rate for the third quarter to 0.76, a 0.05 increase year-on-year.

This positive trend is mirrored by a significant increase in marriages. September saw 15,368 marriages, an 18.9% increase compared to September 2022. The third-quarter marriage figure reached 51,706, a 24% year-on-year increase, and the January-September total sits at 161,711, up 12.8%.

The combined rise in births and marriages fuels optimism that South Korea’s annual total fertility rate for 2023 will surpass that of 2022. While the reasons behind this increase are yet to be fully analyzed, the data points to a significant shift in demographic trends.
