Mon Dec 02 19:01:58 UTC 2024: ## Hamas Claims 33 Captives Killed in Gaza, Amidst Renewed Ceasefire Efforts and PA Management Talks

**GAZA CITY/CAIRO –** Hamas has claimed that 33 captives held in Gaza have been killed since the start of Israel’s ongoing military offensive, blaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “stubbornness” and “aggression.” The group released a video statement Monday detailing the alleged deaths, attributing most to Israeli airstrikes and some to failed rescue attempts. This announcement comes as international mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, are intensifying efforts to secure a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages.

The video, which lists the dates and circumstances of each alleged death, concludes with a stark warning to Israel: “By continuing your mad war, you may lose your captives forever. Do what needs to be done before it’s too late.” The first alleged death was reported on October 9, 2023, while the most recent occurred during an Israeli military operation in northern Gaza last month.

Meanwhile, the White House mourned the death of US citizen Omer Neutra, an Israeli army tank commander killed by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Incoming US President Donald Trump added his voice, issuing a social media warning that there would be “ALL HELL TO PAY” if the hostages are not released by his inauguration on January 20.

Separately, delegations from Fatah and Hamas are meeting in Cairo to discuss the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) potential management of Gaza following the war. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed the talks, aimed at reaching “a mutual understanding” on the PA’s role. While Netanyahu previously opposed PA control, the US reportedly supports a “reformed” PA taking charge.

Despite the diplomatic efforts, Israeli forces continue their bombardment of Gaza, targeting areas such as Jabalia and Abasan al-Kabira. The Gaza Government Media Office reports at least 3,700 people killed or missing since the siege of northern Gaza began 60 days ago. The overall death toll from the conflict since October 7, 2023, stands at at least 44,466 Palestinians (with 105,358 wounded) and at least 1,139 Israelis. Over 200 Israelis remain captive. The UN has described Israel’s offensive as genocide.
