**LIMA, PERU** – Authorities are closer to apprehending the suspect in the murder of 18-year-old barber Anthony Yumbato Panduro, thanks to security camera footage circulating widely on social media. The video clearly shows the face of the alleged killer, who, wearing a grey shirt and helmet, fatally shot Yumbato twice during a robbery at his barbershop on Túpac Amaru Avenue in Chorrillos last Thursday. The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle with an accomplice.
The release of the footage has sparked a massive online campaign to identify and apprehend the suspect. Users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram are sharing the images, demanding justice and urging authorities to act swiftly. Some users have even employed AI to enhance the image quality, improving the chances of identification.
Yumbato’s father, Richard Yumbato, traveled from Requena, Loreto, to retrieve his son’s body from the Lima morgue. Overwhelmed with grief, he described his son as a peaceful young man with no known enemies and pleaded for justice, expressing his frustration at the slow pace of the investigation. The case, classified as aggravated robbery resulting in homicide, is being investigated by the Chorrillos Provincial Penal Corporate Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Prosecutor María Cristina Jiménez León.
The widespread sharing of the security footage highlights the growing public outrage over rising crime in Lima and underscores the community’s desire for swift and effective action from law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing.
