**COIMBATORE, December 3, 2024** – The Amaravathy dam in Udumalpet taluk, Tiruppur district, is overflowing despite the release of 4.5 tmcft of surplus water, bringing much-needed relief to farmers and residents. The dam, with a full reservoir level of 90 ft and a capacity of 4 tmcft, irrigates 55,000 acres across Tiruppur and Karur districts.
While the dam previously suffered from water scarcity, leading to dry spells and impacting over 50 drinking water schemes, it has remained full for the past two years. Even with the recent release of 24,000 cusecs of water through nine sluices, the water level remains at its brim. This abundance of water benefits farmers cultivating sugarcane, plantains, maize, millets, and vegetables in the region. The dam’s water sources include the Chinnaru and Thenaru rivers from the Western Ghats, and the Silandhi and Pambaru rivers from Kerala. The overflowing dam is a welcome sight for the local community, ensuring both irrigation and drinking water supplies.
