**Ahmedabad, Gujarat –** Two young men, Amit Rathore (26) and Vishal Rathore (27), died instantly in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night after a speeding Hyundai Creta SUV, driven by a drunk driver, jumped a road divider and crashed into their scooter. The horrific accident, captured on CCTV, occurred on the Naroda-Dehgam road.
The driver, identified as Gopal Patel, was apprehended by residents who witnessed the incident and subsequently handed him over to police. Police confirmed Patel was driving under the influence of alcohol and have charged him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Footage shows Patel’s SUV overtaking an auto-rickshaw at a high rate of speed before losing control, becoming airborne for several seconds, and colliding with the Rathore brothers’ Honda Activa scooter.
Ahmedabad rural police chief Om Prakash Jat confirmed the arrest and the charges against Patel. The incident underscores the alarming statistics on road accidents in India, with over 1.68 lakh fatalities reported in 2022 alone, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Over speeding, drunk driving, and other reckless behaviors contribute significantly to this tragic toll.
