**Chennai, November 30, 2024** – Cyclone Fengal made landfall on the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast near Puducherry at approximately 7:30 PM on November 30th, bringing heavy rains and widespread flooding to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the cyclone, moving west-southwest, crossed the coast as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph. The landfall process is expected to continue for several hours, resulting in heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Chennai and surrounding districts experienced significant impacts, with over 134 locations reporting waterlogging and seven key subways closed. The heaviest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Ennore (130 mm), while several Chennai stations recorded over 80 mm. Public transport on the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) was suspended, and Chennai airport extended its closure until 4 AM on December 1st. Train services operated with reduced frequency.
A red alert remains in effect for seven districts, including Chennai, and an orange alert for several others. The Tamil Nadu government declared November 30th a holiday for educational institutions and urged IT firms to allow employees to work from home. Relief camps and food distribution are underway for vulnerable populations. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reviewed the situation and confirmed that precautionary measures are in place.
Despite government warnings, some individuals were seen at beaches and tourist sites, creating safety concerns. One fatality has been reported – a migrant worker electrocuted in North Chennai.
The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall in interior Tamil Nadu on December 1st, with isolated heavy rainfall predicted for the following two days. The slow movement of the cyclone is expected to bring prolonged and intense rainfall to coastal areas. Authorities are working to clear waterlogging and restore services, but the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
