Sat Nov 30 17:53:52 UTC 2024: ## Ceasefire Violations Spark Renewed Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah

**BEIRUT/JERUSALEM** – A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, in place since Wednesday after nearly 14 months of intense fighting, is teetering on the brink of collapse following a series of Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon. The attacks, which Israel claims were in response to Hezbollah ceasefire violations, have resulted in at least two deaths and several injuries.

On Saturday, Israeli drones targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported two fatalities and two injuries following a strike in the village of Rab el-Thalathine. Further attacks in Majdal Zoun and Beisariyah left at least three more injured, including a child, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.

The Israeli military confirmed the strikes, stating they targeted a Hezbollah facility containing rocket launchers in Sidon and a vehicle carrying rocket-propelled grenades and other military equipment. They maintain the actions were a necessary response to Hezbollah’s alleged breaches of the ceasefire agreement, which stipulates Hezbollah’s withdrawal north of the Litani River and the dismantling of its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

Israel has asserted its right to “full military freedom of action” should Hezbollah violate the agreement. Hezbollah, however, has countered these claims, accusing Israel of initiating the violence and violating the terms of the ceasefire.

The ongoing conflict has already exacted a devastating toll. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,961 people, wounded more than 16,500, and displaced over one million. Israeli authorities, meanwhile, cite Hezbollah attacks as having resulted in the deaths of 45 civilians and at least 73 Israeli soldiers. The latest escalation raises serious concerns about the future stability of the region and the tenuous hold of the current ceasefire.
