Sat Nov 30 16:51:35 UTC 2024: ## Gaza Death Toll Rises Amidst Ceasefire Talks

**Cairo, Egypt –** At least 32 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip overnight, bringing the overall death toll from the ongoing conflict to at least 44,382, according to Gaza officials. The escalation comes as Hamas leaders arrived in Cairo for ceasefire talks with Egyptian officials, following a separate ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Among the casualties were three employees of the US-based aid group World Central Kitchen, according to WAFA, the official Palestinian news agency. The Israeli military claimed responsibility for killing a Palestinian accused of involvement in the October 7th Hamas attack, stating it was investigating claims the individual worked for World Central Kitchen. The organization has yet to comment. The Gaza Civil Defence reported the death of one of its officers, raising the total number of civil defense workers killed since October 7, 2023, to 88.

The renewed violence casts a shadow over the ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Cairo. While Egypt is mediating talks between Hamas and Israeli officials, significant disagreements remain. Hamas is demanding the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held in Gaza as part of any deal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the war until Hamas is eradicated.

The recent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, brokered by the US, offers a glimmer of hope for a broader resolution. President Biden has urged both Israel and Hamas to engage in meaningful negotiations towards a Gaza ceasefire. However, the significant loss of life and widespread destruction in Gaza continue to hinder progress. The conflict, which began 13 months ago with a Hamas attack on southern Israel, has displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza at least once.
