**Chennai, Tamil Nadu –** A red alert is in effect for Chennai and northern Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Fengal intensifies its approach to landfall, bringing heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across the region. The cyclone, currently 110 km southeast of Chennai, is expected to make landfall near Puducherry by Saturday night, with wind speeds potentially reaching 90 kmph.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Chennai and surrounding areas have already experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall, leading to significant waterlogging in over 130 locations, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation. Subways in six areas are closed due to flooding. Kathivakkam recorded the highest rainfall at 12 cm.
The Tamil Nadu government has initiated extensive precautionary measures. Over 2,000 relief camps are open, housing 500 individuals evacuated from vulnerable areas. More than 4,100 fishing boats have returned to harbor. Public transport along the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) is suspended, and Chennai Airport temporarily halted operations from noon to 7 pm, causing flight disruptions.
Chief Minister MK Stalin is leading the relief efforts from the State Emergency Operations Centre, coordinating rescue teams, food distribution, and water drainage operations. Residents are urged to remain indoors and avoid coastal areas.
The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall in coastal and inland Tamil Nadu even after landfall. Neighboring Andhra Pradesh and Sri Lanka have also experienced heavy rain, floods, and landslides attributed to the cyclone. Authorities remain on high alert as the region prepares for the full impact of Cyclone Fengal.
