Sat Nov 30 10:28:49 UTC 2024: ## Congress Launches Introspection After Crushing Election Losses in Maharashtra and Haryana

**New Delhi** – The Congress party is reeling from back-to-back electoral defeats in Maharashtra and Haryana, prompting a call for urgent internal reforms and a crackdown on infighting. Following a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Friday, party president Mallikarjun Kharge warned against internal dissent and vowed to take decisive action to address the party’s shortcomings.

Congress secured a dismal 16 out of 288 seats in Maharashtra, its worst performance in the state in recent history. Its allies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition also suffered significant losses. The Haryana results were deemed equally disappointing, prompting allegations of electoral malpractice.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi urged Kharge to take a firm stance against internal conflicts, emphasizing the need for unity and discipline within the party. Kharge echoed this sentiment, stating that the party needs to present a united front to effectively oppose its rivals.

To address the losses, the CWC has announced plans for comprehensive state-wise reviews and the formation of internal committees to investigate the causes of the defeats in Maharashtra and Haryana. These committees will meet with local leaders to gain insights into the issues.

The CWC resolution also expressed serious concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission, alleging threats to free and fair elections. Despite the setbacks, the resolution called for renewed determination and unity, outlining key policy positions including a caste census, removal of reservation caps, and addressing economic monopolies and rising unemployment.

Furthermore, Congress announced plans for a nationwide movement in conjunction with INDIA bloc parties to address concerns about the electoral process, with rallies planned to mobilize public support. The party’s communication chief, Jairam Ramesh, confirmed the initiative.
