Sat Nov 30 20:17:00 UTC 2024: ## Imran Khan’s Wife, Bushra Bibi, Takes Center Stage in Pakistan’s Political Crisis

**Islamabad, Pakistan –** Bushra Bibi, wife of imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has emerged as a prominent figure in the ongoing political turmoil, leading a major protest demanding her husband’s release. Bibi, who maintains a low public profile, addressed thousands of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters in Islamabad on November 25-26, urging them to continue their “do or die” sit-in until Khan’s release. The protest, which defied a government ban, resulted in clashes between protesters and security forces. While Bibi and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur initially participated, they later withdrew from the “Red Zone” following the escalation of violence.

Bibi, a follower of Sufism, married Khan in 2018. Unlike Khan’s previous wives, Jemima Goldsmith and Reham Khan, she has largely avoided the public eye, typically appearing in a concealing abaya. Her influence on Khan reportedly grew significantly after his election victory. While some view her as a spiritual leader, political rivals have accused her of sorcery and manipulating Khan. Legal challenges have also surrounded her marriage to Khan, with a court initially voiding the union before later acquitting the couple.

Bibi’s arrest earlier this year in connection with the Toshakhana case, which involves undeclared state gifts, further cemented her role in the PTI’s struggle. Since her release in October, along with Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, she has become a key rallying point for the party, whose top leadership is largely incarcerated. Her involvement in the November protests, despite lacking formal political experience, highlights the leadership vacuum within the PTI and her growing influence on the party’s strategy. While the protests were ultimately called off due to a government crackdown, Bibi’s unexpected prominence underscores the depth of the political crisis gripping Pakistan.
