Fri Nov 29 23:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Zelensky Proposes NATO Security Guarantee for Ukrainian Territory in Exchange for Peace with Russia

**KYIV, UKRAINE** – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a key concession to NATO to potentially end the ongoing war with Russia. In an interview with Sky News, Zelenskyy suggested that a NATO security guarantee for the territory currently under Ukrainian control could pave the way for a ceasefire and subsequent diplomatic efforts to reclaim lost land.

The protracted conflict, which began in February 2022, has seen intense fighting and periods of escalating tensions. While recent fighting has lessened somewhat, the situation remains volatile, particularly given the continued flow of Western weaponry to Ukraine, including long-range missiles recently approved for use against Russia by the US.

Zelenskyy’s proposal involves a two-step process. First, NATO would guarantee the security of Ukrainian territory currently held by Kyiv. Subsequently, Ukraine would be fully integrated into NATO, potentially bringing all its territory under the alliance’s protection. Only with these guarantees in place, Zelenskyy stated, would Ukraine consider a ceasefire. He indicated that diplomatic efforts to regain territories occupied by Russia could then begin.

This proposal comes amidst continued US military aid to Ukraine, with a recent $725 million package announced, including land mines, drones, and advanced rocket systems. Russia, in response to Western military support, has continued its offensive actions.

The situation remains highly sensitive, with both sides showing little willingness to compromise fully. Zelenskyy’s suggestion represents a significant potential turning point in the conflict, however, offering a possible framework for negotiations and de-escalation.
