Fri Nov 29 19:59:43 UTC 2024: ## Two Arrested, 29 Calves Rescued from Overcrowded Truck in Kochi
**KOCHI, November 30, 2024** – Two men were arrested in Kochi on Friday after being caught transporting 29 calves in an overcrowded pickup truck. Animal rights activist T.K. Sajeev, secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), intercepted the vehicle at Kannangattu Junction on Willingdon Island.
The arrested individuals, identified as Afsal V.M., 42, and Subair, 45, both from Fort Kochi, served as the driver and cleaner, respectively. The calves, some only days old, were allegedly being transported from Palakkad for slaughter. Police described the conditions as inhumane, with far too many calves crammed into the truck’s limited space.
The Harbour police registered a case under Section 11 (1)(d) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which prohibits transporting animals in a manner causing unnecessary pain or suffering. Both men were later released on bail. The rescued calves are now under the care of the SPCA.
