**Dubai, UAE:** India’s Under-19 cricket team suffered a 44-run defeat against Pakistan in their opening match of the 2024 Asia Cup on Saturday at the Dubai International Stadium. Chasing a challenging 282-run target, India was bowled out for 237 in 48 overs.
Pakistan’s captain, Saad Beg, won the toss and opted to bat first. Their decision proved fruitful as Shahzaib Khan smashed a magnificent 159, including 10 sixes and 5 fours, leading Pakistan to a total of 281/7. Usman Khan contributed a solid 60. The opening partnership between Khan and Usman yielded 160 runs. For India, Samarth Nagraj took three wickets.
In response, India’s innings faltered early, losing wickets regularly. While Nikhil Kumar fought valiantly, scoring 60 runs, the team’s batting lineup failed to build substantial partnerships. The early dismissal of 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi for just 1 run added to India’s woes. Ali Raza claimed three wickets for Pakistan, while Abdul Subhan and Farhan ul Haq took two each.
Despite a strong fightback by Nikhil Kumar and a late contribution from Mohammad Anan (30 runs), India’s efforts fell short. India’s next match is against Japan on December 2nd in Sharjah. The tournament, being played in a 50-over format, sees India in Group B alongside Pakistan, Japan, and UAE. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on December 6th, with the final scheduled for December 8th.
