Fri Nov 29 18:37:14 UTC 2024: ## Shah Urges Focus on Eastern Border Security, Immigration at DGP/IGP Conference

**Jaipur, India** – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday called for a heightened focus on emerging security challenges along India’s eastern border, immigration issues, and evolving trends in urban policing. Addressing the 59th annual DGPs/IGPs conference, Shah commended police leadership for the successful execution of the 2024 general elections and the smooth implementation of three new criminal laws.

The conference, attended by around 250 DGPs and IGPs (physically) and over 200 virtually, is addressing a range of national security concerns, including counter-terrorism, left-wing extremism, coastal security, narcotics, cybercrime, and economic security. Shah’s emphasis on the eastern border comes amidst unrest in neighboring Bangladesh following political upheaval, and reports of attacks on minority groups. India has voiced strong concerns to Dhaka regarding this issue.

Shah expressed satisfaction with improved security in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast, and areas affected by left-wing extremism. He highlighted the transformative impact of the new criminal laws, shifting the focus of the criminal justice system from punishment to justice, while emphasizing their alignment with Indian traditions. He also advocated for a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will attend the remaining two days of the conference, is expected to deliver the concluding address on Sunday. The conference includes presentations on various subjects such as counter-terrorism, online fraud, cross-border terrorism, and the activities of pro-Khalistani groups. The event also facilitates the sharing of best practices among states and the formulation of actionable strategies to address national security challenges.

Since 2014, the conference has expanded its scope beyond national security to encompass core policing issues, fostering greater interaction between the police leadership and the government. This year’s conference features unique additions, such as yoga sessions and thematic dining tables, aimed at promoting collaboration and idea generation. The shift from a Delhi-centric event to locations across the country since 2014 has strengthened camaraderie and unity among police officers.
