Sat Nov 30 01:00:00 UTC 2024: **Fengal Cyclone to Bring Heavy Rains and Strong Winds to Andhra Pradesh**

Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – November 30, 2024 – The deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, named Fengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts Fengal will make landfall near Puducherry between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on Saturday evening.

The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Agency (APDMA) Managing Director, Ronanki Kurmanath, has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions. Strong winds with speeds of 70-90 km/h are expected along the coast, particularly near Nellore, Tirupati, and Prakasam districts. There is a high risk of flash floods in Nellore, Chittoor, and Kadapa districts. The APDMA has urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and advised farmers to take necessary precautions.

Reports indicate that already heavy rains in Nellore district have caused flooding in the city, disrupting traffic. The rising water levels in the Penna River are also a concern. The state government is closely monitoring the situation at the Somasila dam. Fishermen in coastal areas are apprehensive due to the increasing sea surge. Damage to paddy crops and disruptions to the fishing and handloom industries have already been reported.

Neighboring Tamil Nadu is also experiencing heavy rainfall, with a red alert issued for seven districts, including Chennai. Schools have been closed in many areas. All ports remain under high alert.
