Fri Nov 29 18:48:18 UTC 2024: ## Heavy Rains Devastate Cauvery Delta Crops, Demands for Compensation Rise

**Chennai, November 30, 2024** – Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan is urging the Tamil Nadu state government to conduct a damage assessment survey following heavy rains in the Cauvery delta region. The recent downpours in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam districts have inundated approximately 55,000 acres of farmland, submerging standing crops.

Mr. Vasan attributes the extensive damage to inadequate drainage systems and poorly desilted water channels, leading to water stagnation in paddy fields. He is advocating for compensation of ₹30,000 per acre for affected farmers. The rains have also impacted the livelihoods of over 15,000 salt pan workers in Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam district. Mr. Vasan called on the government to swiftly provide compensation to both farmers and salt workers.
