**Chennai, Tamil Nadu –** Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts on November 30th, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, including Chennai, and an orange alert for others.
The cyclone, which intensified from a deep depression, is predicted to cross the coast between Karaikal and Mamallapuram, close to Puducherry, with wind speeds reaching 70-80 km/h and gusts up to 90 km/h. The IMD forecasts isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall possible in some areas.
Authorities are taking precautionary measures. Over 4,000 fishing boats have returned to shore, and 2,229 relief camps are on standby. The Tamil Nadu government, under Chief Minister MK Stalin, has held meetings to review preparedness and relief measures, advising residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has also chaired similar meetings. Schools and colleges in several districts have been closed.
The Indian Navy has activated a comprehensive disaster response plan, focusing on humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations, working closely with the state government to ensure a swift response. Relief materials, including food, water, and medicine, are being pre-positioned in vulnerable areas.
The impact of the approaching cyclone is already being felt, with high tides and gusty winds reported in Chennai. Earlier this week, heavy rain caused damage to paddy crops in Nagapattinam district. This is the second post-monsoon cyclone to hit the Indian coast, following Cyclone Dana in Odisha in late October.
