**Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India – November 30, 2024** – Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry on Saturday, November 30th, 2024, bringing torrential rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding to Chennai and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red weather alerts for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Chennai Airport suspended operations until 4 a.m. on December 1st, resulting in over 100 flight cancellations and numerous diversions. MRTS services were also suspended, and many roads became impassable due to severe waterlogging. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin reported waterlogging in 334 locations across Chennai, with the Greater Chennai Corporation deploying 1,700 workers and heavy machinery to address the situation. The city’s reservoirs, however, saw a marginal increase in water levels due to the heavy rainfall.

Puducherry’s administration sent SMS alerts to 12 lakh residents urging vigilance. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy visited affected areas and reported that evacuation and relief efforts were underway.

The impact extended beyond Chennai. Train services were disrupted, with several trains cancelled or diverted. Telangana experienced a surprising temperature rise due to the cyclone’s effect on cloud cover. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister extended the deadline for electricity bill payments in affected districts.

The IMD warned of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Andhra Pradesh. The storm’s impact also reached Sri Lanka, causing floods and claiming fifteen lives.
