**Chennai, Tamil Nadu –** Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on Saturday evening, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The impending storm has already caused significant disruptions, leading to the closure of Chennai airport until 4 am Sunday and the suspension of local train services.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for seven coastal districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 90 kmph near the Puducherry coast. The airport closure, initially scheduled for a few hours, was extended after airlines expressed concerns about high crosswinds.

In response to the severe weather, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in four districts and advised IT companies to allow work-from-home arrangements. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated that precautionary measures, including the establishment of relief camps and distribution of food, have been implemented. Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin also reviewed the situation in vulnerable areas. Public transport services on key roads, including the ECR and OMR, have been suspended. Over 2,220 relief camps have been set up across the state, with around 500 people already accommodated.

Puducherry has also experienced heavy rainfall, leading to school and college closures and the evacuation of residents from low-lying areas. The administration has closed beaches and tourist spots as a precaution. Film screenings have been suspended for Saturday evening and night.

The Indian Navy’s flood relief teams are on standby, and local authorities have deployed essential equipment. The Tamil Nadu government has removed billboards to prevent accidents. Emergency toll-free numbers, 112 and 1077, are operational. The storm’s impact is expected to continue into Sunday.
