**Chennai, Tamil Nadu –** Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on Saturday evening, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The impending cyclone has already led to widespread disruption, with Chennai airport suspending all operations until 4 am Sunday due to heavy rain and high crosswinds. Local train services have also been significantly reduced.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for seven coastal districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 90 kmph near the Puducherry coast. In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in several districts and advised IT companies to allow work-from-home arrangements.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reviewed the situation and confirmed that precautionary measures, including the establishment of over 2,220 relief camps and distribution of food, are underway. Around 500 people have already been accommodated in relief centres. Public transport on key roads like ECR and OMR has been suspended, and billboards and hoardings have been removed to prevent accidents. Emergency toll-free numbers (112 and 1077) have been activated.
Puducherry has also experienced heavy rainfall, with schools and colleges closed and evacuations from low-lying areas underway. Tourist areas, including the beach road, have been closed to the public. The Puducherry administration has also suspended film screenings in theatres for Saturday evening and night.
The Indian Navy has deployed flood relief teams to vulnerable areas, while local authorities have positioned essential equipment like motor pumps, generators, and boats. The situation continues to unfold, with authorities on high alert to manage the impact of Cyclone Fengal.
