Sat Nov 30 12:16:35 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Fengal Batters Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Causing Disruptions and One Fatality

**Chennai, India –** Cyclone Fengal made landfall today between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry, bringing with it heavy rain, strong winds (70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph), and widespread disruption across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts across multiple districts.

The cyclone has caused the closure of Chennai airport until 4 am Sunday due to high crosswinds, and significantly reduced suburban train services. Tragically, one man, identified only as Mr. Verma, was electrocuted at an ATM in Chennai amidst the heavy rain, reportedly due to a short circuit.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, is impacting several districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Coastal areas are experiencing high tides and rough seas. Schools and colleges are closed in several affected districts.

Authorities have taken precautionary measures, deploying the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster response teams. Boats, generators, and other equipment are on standby. Fishermen have been urged to remain ashore and secure their boats.

The IMD’s Dr. S Balachandran warned of potential damage to telecommunication lines and flooding in low-lying areas, particularly along the coast. The storm’s impact is expected to be most severe in the coastal districts.
