CHAPEL HILL, NC – In a surprising turn of events, the University of North Carolina (UNC) announced Tuesday the dismissal of Hall of Fame football coach Mack Brown, just one day after Brown stated his intention to return for the upcoming season. Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham informed Brown of the decision. Brown, 73, will coach the Tar Heels’ final regular season game against NC State on Saturday, but his participation in a potential bowl game remains undecided.
Brown, who holds the record for most wins in UNC football history (113-78-1 in two stints), expressed his disappointment but emphasized his commitment to preparing the team for their final game. He stated, “While this was not the perfect time and way in which I imagined going out, no time will ever be the perfect time.” He praised his time at UNC, highlighting the relationships built and players mentored.
Cunningham cited Brown’s significant contributions to the program, including six bowl berths in his second tenure, 18 NFL draft picks, and fundraising efforts. However, the decision comes amidst a season of setbacks, including a school-record loss to James Madison, the death of receiver Tylee Craft, and inconsistent on-field performance, particularly a disappointing offensive showing in 2024 with record lows in several key categories. While Brown initially expressed his desire to return after a recent interview with ESPN, the athletic department ultimately chose a different path.
Brown’s 288 career victories rank eighth all-time in FBS history. His contract, with three years remaining at $5 million annually, will be paid in full by UNC’s athletic department. The search for a new head coach is already underway. Currently, only Kirby Smart (Georgia) and Dabo Swinney (Clemson) remain as active FBS head coaches with national championship wins.
