LEICESTER, ENGLAND – Raj Sidpara, 50, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, 44-year-old Tarnjeet Riaz (also known as Tarnjeet Chagger). The sentencing follows a trial at Leicester Crown Court where Sidpara was found guilty of murder last week.
Emergency services found Ms. Riaz dead at Sidpara’s home on Tarbat Road on May 6th, suffering from extensive facial trauma, multiple broken ribs, and bleeding on the brain. The court heard evidence of a sustained and savage attack involving punching, kicking, and stamping. While Sidpara initially pleaded guilty to manslaughter, he denied intending to kill or cause serious harm.
Judge William Harbage described the attack as “savage and merciless,” noting Sidpara’s refusal to explain his actions. The court also revealed Sidpara had a history of violence, with 24 previous convictions for 46 offenses, including threats to kill and harassment. He was diagnosed with alcohol dependence syndrome.
The murder has prompted Leicestershire Police to reiterate the importance of addressing domestic violence. Detective Inspector Emma Matts stated, “Tarnjeet was killed at the hands of someone she was in a relationship with… someone she should have feared would brutally attack her.” DI Matts emphasized the complexity of domestic abuse and urged victims to seek support. The sentencing coincides with White Ribbon Day, an international campaign against violence against women and girls. Ms. Riaz’s family is left grieving and questioning if more could have been done.
