Fri Nov 29 23:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Zelenskyy Proposes NATO Umbrella for Controlled Ukrainian Territory to Halt War’s “Hot Phase”

**Kyiv, Ukraine** – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested placing Ukrainian territory under the control of NATO as a means to end the “hot phase” of the war with Russia. In an interview with Sky News, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has never formally considered such a proposition because no such offer has ever been officially made.

“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we need to take it,” Zelenskyy said. “NATO should take under its umbrella the territory of Ukraine that is under our control. This is what we need to do quickly, and then Ukraine can regain other parts of its territory diplomatically.” He emphasized that this proposal has never been formally considered due to a lack of official offers. He also clarified that “you cannot invite only part of a country within its internationally recognized borders.”

This proposal comes amidst a backdrop of escalating violence. Recent Russian drone and missile strikes targeting civilian infrastructure have left over one million Ukrainians without heat and power in freezing temperatures. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak discussed these attacks with Zelenskyy, condemning the attacks as “barbaric” and vowing to continue support for Ukraine. The conversation also included developments in defense cooperation and strengthening Ukraine’s long-range capabilities. Zelenskyy previously unveiled a plan for victory against Russia, which includes a crucial, yet currently unfulfilled step: an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO before the war’s conclusion.
