Fri Nov 29 23:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Exposes Ration Rice Mafia, Questions Government’s Role

**Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh:** Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister, Pawan Kalyan, today launched a scathing attack on the alleged ration rice mafia operating in Kakinada. He criticized the system, questioning whether the fault lies with a government that implements schemes without understanding public needs, or with individuals misusing government programs.

Kalyan’s comments came after he observed irregularities in the distribution of ration rice. He highlighted the stark contrast between the government’s subsidized price of ₹1 per kg and the market price of ₹40-₹80 per kg. He pointed out that a significant portion of the rural population doesn’t even consume the allocated rice, primarily because many families cultivate their own food. He estimated that only 10-20% of rural households utilize the ration rice.

Kalyan detailed how the surplus rice is siphoned off, tracing its journey from individual households to local traders, then to wholesalers and finally to large mills in Kakinada. This rice is then processed, repackaged, and allegedly exported, turning a subsidized grain into a lucrative commodity.

He questioned the effectiveness of government efforts, noting that while parties swap power and change policies related to ration cards, the core issues remain unchanged. He proposed solutions, such as offering alternative food items to those who don’t need the rice and implementing stringent checks on mills using modern technology. He stressed that superficial crackdowns, especially those focused solely on ports, are insufficient to address the systemic problem.

The Deputy CM’s visit also highlighted an apparent lack of cooperation from local authorities. He stated that the Superintendent of Police was on leave during his visit, further fueling his concerns about the system’s effectiveness and the lack of serious action against the perpetrators. He directly questioned the local MLA, Kondababu, about his role in addressing this issue.

The incident has sparked a heated debate about government accountability and the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures in Andhra Pradesh. Kalyan’s accusations have put the spotlight on the complexities of implementing welfare schemes and the urgent need for systemic reform to prevent the exploitation of public resources.
