**Chennai, Tamil Nadu, November 30, 2024** – Heavy rains and strong winds are lashing Chennai as Cyclone Biparjoy moves closer to the Tamil Nadu coast. The cyclone, currently 190 km southeast of Chennai and 180 km from Puducherry, is expected to make landfall near Karaikal and Mahabalipuram later today.
The severe weather has caused significant disruption. Six flights to Chennai have been cancelled, including flights from Singapore, Trichy, and Mangalore. At least one flight from Kuwait has been forced to circle above the city, unable to land due to the inclement conditions.
East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) are experiencing particularly heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to power outages in Mahabalipuram, Poongeri, and surrounding areas. Authorities are advising commuters to avoid these routes. Flights to Trichy, Tuticorin, Mysore, Bangalore, and the Andaman Islands are currently operating as scheduled, but passengers are urged to check flight times before travelling.
The downpour has caused significant flooding in several areas, including Adyar, Besant Nagar, and Thiruvanmiyur. The intense weather is expected to continue throughout the day.
