Sat Nov 30 01:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Fenjal to Make Landfall Near Chennai; Heavy Rain and High Winds Expected

**Chennai, Tamil Nadu (November 30, 2024)** – Cyclone Fenjal, currently located 190 km southeast of Chennai, is expected to make landfall between Mamallapuram and Karaikal later today, moving at a speed of 7 kmph. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall and winds gusting between 60-90 kmph in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Mayiladuthurai districts.

In anticipation of the cyclone’s landfall, intermittent heavy rain has already begun in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur districts. As a precautionary measure, public transport services have been temporarily suspended along the East Coast Road and OMR. The state government has urged citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoiding coastal areas, parks, and entertainment venues. The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has echoed this warning.

While Chennai Metropolitan Bus services are reportedly operating as usual, Marina Beach Road has been temporarily closed. The government has also instructed IT employees to work from home. Power supply has been preemptively cut off in Mamallapuram and surrounding areas due to strong winds.

Schools and colleges have been declared closed for the day in several districts including Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Mayiladuthurai, Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet. Schools in Thiruvidaimarudur and Kumbakonam taluks of Thanjavur district are also closed. The IMD and state authorities continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as needed.
