Fri Nov 29 02:09:29 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Schools Closed as Deep Depression Brings Heavy Rains to Tamil Nadu

**Chennai, Tamil Nadu, November 29, 2024** – Schools in Chennai and Chengalpattu have been closed due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal that is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu. The system, currently located about 310 km southeast of Nagapattinam, is projected to cross the coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram by Friday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall (over 24.4 cm) in several districts, including parts of the delta region and north coastal areas, for Friday and Saturday. Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, are expected to be the hardest hit. Eight other districts, including Ranipet and Tiruchi, are also forecast to receive heavy rainfall on Friday.

Chennai and its neighboring districts, while experiencing increased rainfall since Wednesday, are also under a red alert for Saturday. The IMD predicts that Chennai and surrounding areas, Ariyalur, and Thanjavur could experience very heavy rainfall in one or two places on Friday.

As a precautionary measure, the government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal regions for Friday and Saturday. The IMD predicts that the deep depression will bring moderate to heavy rainfall across much of the state over the next few days. Coastal areas have already experienced tidal waves.
