Fri Nov 29 05:02:31 UTC 2024: ## Sweden Demands Chinese Cooperation in Baltic Sea Cable Damage Investigation
**STOCKHOLM, Sweden (November 29, 2024)** – Sweden has formally requested China’s cooperation in investigating the recent damage to two undersea data cables in the Baltic Sea. The request follows the discovery that a Chinese-flagged bulk carrier, the *Yi Peng 3*, was sighted near the damaged cables in Swedish waters last week.
The cables, one connecting Finland and Germany, and the other Lithuania and Sweden, were both severed in an area where the *Yi Peng 3* was present. While currently moored in international waters between Sweden and Denmark, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that Sweden has formally requested the vessel be moved into Swedish waters for inspection as part of an ongoing international investigation. He emphasized Sweden’s desire for “clarity on what has happened.”
The announcement came following a security meeting of Baltic Sea region leaders, where Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed full support for Sweden’s investigation. While German authorities have suggested sabotage may be responsible, no evidence has yet been presented.
China, while initially stating a lack of information regarding the *Yi Peng 3*, has expressed a willingness to communicate with relevant parties and called for the vessel’s navigational rights to be respected. This incident follows a similar incident last year where a Swedish cable to Estonia was found to have been deliberately damaged. The investigation is ongoing.
