Wed Nov 27 21:23:43 UTC 2024: ## NATO Article 5 Invocation Possible Amidst Rising Russian Hybrid Warfare: German Intelligence Chief
**Berlin, Germany** – Germany’s foreign intelligence chief, Bruno Kahl, warned on Wednesday that Russia’s escalating hybrid warfare tactics, including sabotage against Western targets, could force NATO to invoke Article 5 of its mutual defense pact. Speaking at a Berlin think tank, Kahl stated that Russia’s increased military capabilities and battle-hardened troops from the Ukraine war pose a significant threat. He predicted Russia’s military could be capable of attacking NATO by the end of the decade.
While there’s no current indication of an imminent Russian attack, Kahl highlighted that Moscow might test Western resolve through limited actions, such as deploying troops to protect purported Russian minorities in the Baltics or altering borders. The goal, according to Kahl’s assessment of Russian thinking, would be to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of Article 5, thereby fracturing Western unity.
Kahl also revealed that Russian defense ministry officials reportedly doubt NATO would invoke Article 5, particularly concerning US involvement. He emphasized that a potential Russian attack on NATO allies wouldn’t aim for large-scale territorial gains, but rather to undermine Western unity and the alliance itself. The increasing use of hybrid warfare tactics significantly raises the risk of NATO invoking Article 5, he stressed. NATO and Western intelligence agencies have already voiced concerns about Russia’s involvement in various hostile activities across the Euro-Atlantic region.
