Thu Nov 28 14:32:47 UTC 2024: ## UK Net Migration Falls After Record High, but Remains Significant

**London** – Net migration to the United Kingdom has fallen by 20 percent from its record high, according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The data shows that net migration reached a record 906,000 in the year to June 2023, before dropping to 728,000 in the year to June 2024. This decrease is attributed to stricter visa rules, particularly those affecting dependants of students.

The ONS described the 2023 figure as “unprecedented levels,” a significant increase from the 321,000 recorded in the year leading up to the 2016 Brexit referendum. While the post-Brexit changes reduced EU migration, there was a surge in arrivals from countries like India, Nigeria, and Pakistan, largely filling vacancies in healthcare and social care.

The record high in 2023 occurred under the previous Conservative government, which had pledged to reduce immigration. The current Labour government, elected in July 2024, has also stated its intention to lower migration numbers by investing in domestic skills training. However, the government has blamed the Conservatives for the record-breaking numbers.

Migration Minister Seema Malhotra emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling immigration system abuse and ensuring employers comply with regulations. Concerns remain among the public regarding the impact of high migration on housing and public services, while employers in some sectors highlight their reliance on foreign workers.
