Thu Nov 28 03:55:49 UTC 2024: **Uber Launches New Safety Features in India**
**Mumbai, November 28, 2024** – Ride-hailing service Uber has introduced several new safety features in India, aimed at enhancing security for both drivers and riders. Key initiatives include a nationwide audio recording feature and a Women Rider Preference (WRP) option.
The audio recording feature, an industry first according to Uber, allows riders to record their trips if they feel unsafe. These encrypted recordings are inaccessible to Uber, drivers, and passengers unless submitted as part of a safety report, complying with India’s one-party consent law. Recordings are automatically deleted after a set period.
The WRP option allows female drivers to choose to accept rides only from female passengers, particularly helpful during late-night hours. Uber reports over 21,000 trips have already been facilitated by this feature, which is live across all Indian cities. The company stated that WRP helps women drivers prioritize safety, work longer hours, and increase their earnings.
Uber has also partnered with Bengaluru-based NGO Durga to provide virtual safety training for drivers, focusing on addressing the specific concerns of women riders. A customizable “Safety Preferences” option within the app allows riders to automatically activate features like sharing trip details with trusted contacts, audio recording, and RideCheck alerts based on time or location.
Finally, Uber announced an upcoming SOS feature that will connect riders directly to the Maharashtra Police control room, sharing crucial trip details. This feature is currently in pilot mode in Maharashtra and will soon expand to other cities. While Uber has not disclosed the exact number of women drivers on its platform, these new initiatives represent a significant investment in improving rider and driver safety in India.
