**Chennai, November 27, 2024** – Five women were tragically killed on Wednesday afternoon when a speeding car lost control and ran them over near Thiruporur in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. The victims, all residents of Payyanur village, were identified as M. Andhaayi (71), C. Logammmal (56), G. Yasodha (54), S. Vijaya (53), and K. Gowri (52). They were tending to their cattle near the roadside when the accident occurred.
The car, carrying four college students, was traveling from Thiruporur towards Mamallapuram at approximately 2:15 pm when it veered off course and struck the women. Two of the women were thrown several feet by the impact.
Two of the car’s occupants, Joshua (19) and Ahmed (20), were apprehended by enraged villagers who had witnessed the incident and subsequently thrashed them before police arrived. The other two passengers escaped. Police have arrested Joshua and Ahmed, who are students at a private college near Thiruporur. While initial investigations suggest the students were not intoxicated, they have been sent for medical examination.
Following the accident, angry villagers from Payyanur blocked the road, demanding stringent action against those responsible and financial compensation for the victims’ families. Chengalpattu Superintendent of Police V.V. Sai Praneeth visited the scene, assuring the villagers that their demands would be addressed.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Government General Hospital in Chengalpattu for post-mortem examinations. Police are continuing their efforts to apprehend the two remaining occupants of the vehicle.
