Wed Nov 27 15:43:52 UTC 2024: ## Gruesome Details Emerge in Manipur Massacre: Autopsies Reveal Brutal Killings of Family, Including Infant
**Imphal, Manipur –** A post-mortem report has revealed the horrific details of the murder of a Meitei family of six, including a 10-month-old infant, in Manipur’s Jiribam district. The family was kidnapped on November 11th by individuals the Manipur government has identified as Kuki militants. The bodies were discovered floating in a river between November 15th and 18th.
The autopsy of the infant, Laishram Lamnganba Singh, revealed injuries consistent with extreme violence: a gunshot wound to the knee, stab wounds to the chest, blunt force trauma to the jaw, and a chop wound to the chest that fractured his ribs. Both of the infant’s eyeballs were missing, and his body showed signs of advanced decomposition.
The report also details the injuries suffered by other family members: 8-year-old Telem Thajamanbi Devi sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder that pierced her heart and lungs; her mother, Telem Thoiboi Devi (31), was shot four times in the chest and suffered a crushed skull. The infant’s mother, L Heitonbi Devi (25), grandmother Y Rani Devi (60), and 3-year-old brother were all found to have been shot.
Two other Meitei elders, Maibam Kesho Meitei (72) and Laishram Baren Meitei (64), killed on the same day, died from severe burn injuries sustained when Kuki militants set houses on fire after attacking a police station.
A photo of the family, taken just before their abduction, was circulated on a now-defunct WhatsApp group, “Zogam News,” with 12,000 subscribers. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating this and another group, “CHETCHETNETNET-CCNN,” which also shared the image.
The killings have sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders across party lines, who described the incident as a premeditated terror attack. The violence follows an earlier attack on November 7th, where a woman from the Hmar tribe was allegedly killed and raped by suspected Meitei militants, an event that civil society groups claim the Manipur government has failed to address.
The ongoing conflict between the Meitei community and the Kuki tribes, stemming from land disputes and political grievances, has claimed over 220 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. The situation remains volatile, with accusations and counter-accusations flying between the two sides.
