KOCHI, INDIA – November 28, 2024 – The Ernakulam Rural police have significantly intensified their fight against drug trafficking, reporting a substantial increase in arrests and seizures under their ongoing Operation Clean. From January to October 2024, police registered 1,582 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, arresting 1,739 individuals. Authorities seized approximately 200 kg of ganja, 2.5 kg of MDMA, and nearly 200 grams of heroin—one of the largest heroin seizures in the region recently. Notable cases include the arrest of a woman with over 1 kg of MDMA concealed in a heater at Aluva railway station, and the apprehension of a three-member group from Assam attempting to smuggle heroin hidden in soap boxes. In addition to enforcement, the police have also launched social media campaigns to raise awareness against substance abuse. District Police Chief Vaibhav Saxena highlighted the multifaceted approach, combining strong enforcement with public awareness initiatives.
