Thu Nov 28 10:35:09 UTC 2024: ## Israel and Hezbollah Agree to Ceasefire After Two-Month War

**BEIRUT, LEBANON – November 28, 2024** – A two-month war between Israel and Hezbollah has ended with a US- and France-mediated ceasefire, leaving the future uncertain for thousands of displaced civilians on both sides of the border. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu framed the agreement as a strategic victory, allowing Israel to focus on Iran and Gaza, analysts point to a less decisive outcome.

Netanyahu launched the October 1st invasion, Israel’s fourth into Lebanon, aiming to secure the return of over 60,000 northern Israelis displaced by Hezbollah rocket attacks. The ceasefire agreement stipulates the withdrawal of both Israeli and Hezbollah forces, with the Lebanese army tasked with monitoring the border region. However, this raises concerns, given the Lebanese army’s relative weakness compared to Hezbollah.

Though Israel inflicted heavy losses on Hezbollah, including the death of its long-time leader Hassan Nasrallah, the Israeli military failed to achieve its stated goals. Hezbollah retained significant rocket capabilities, launching over 250 rockets into Israel just days before the ceasefire. Israel also suffered substantial military casualties, with approximately 35 soldiers lost in October alone. Furthermore, Israel failed to significantly curb Hezbollah’s ability to launch attacks, with high-security locations, including Netanyahu’s residence, targeted.

The ceasefire, while ending active hostilities, is far from a complete resolution. Hezbollah remains a potent force, and the effectiveness of the Lebanese army in enforcing the agreement remains highly questionable. While Netanyahu might portray the agreement as a victory, the reality on the ground suggests a significantly less triumphant outcome for Israel. The long-term stability of the region remains uncertain, particularly concerning the potential for renewed conflict.
