Wed Nov 27 19:22:16 UTC 2024: ## Government Collects Over ₹4,700 Crore in GST from Education Services in FY24

**New Delhi** – The Indian government collected ₹4,792.4 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) from non-exempt education services during the 2023-24 financial year, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary revealed today. This figure represents a significant increase from previous years, with a total of over ₹10,000 crore collected over the past three years.

The GST, levied at an 18% rate under Service Accounting Code (SAC) 9992, applies to commercial training and coaching services, but not to core educational services provided by institutions. The government provided a breakdown of collections: ₹2,859 crore in FY21-22, ₹4,243 crore in FY22-23, and ₹4,792.4 crore in FY23-24.

Chaudhary emphasized that GST rates and exemptions are determined by the GST Council, a constitutional body representing both the central and state governments. Exemptions apply to services provided by educational institutions to students, faculty, and staff, encompassing pre-school to higher secondary education, recognized qualification courses, and approved vocational education. Further exemptions extend to ancillary services like student transportation, catering, and security for schools up to the higher secondary level. A recent GST Council decision also exempted affiliation services offered by educational boards to government schools, effective October 10, 2024.
