Thu Nov 28 12:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Fengal to Hit Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Coast

**Chennai, India – November 29, 2023** – A deep depression brewing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into Cyclone Fengal and make landfall on the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast on November 30. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the cyclone will cross the coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram as a deep depression with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph.

Heavy rainfall is already impacting the region. Puducherry has reported 7.5 cm of rainfall, and Karaikal 9.5 cm in the past 24 hours. Schools and colleges in Puducherry are closed today due to the inclement weather. The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next two days, including Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore. Chennai and surrounding areas may also experience heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

In response to the impending cyclone, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has instructed officials to take urgent measures, including relocating residents of low-lying areas to relief camps. A 24/7 control room has been established.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is coordinating with Tamil Nadu state agencies to ensure the safety of seafarers, advising fishing boats to return to harbor. Airlines, including IndiGo, have reported flight disruptions to and from several airports in the region due to adverse weather conditions.

The approaching cyclone has already caused damage in some areas. Farmers in the Cauvery delta region report that paddy crops across an estimated 2,000 acres have been submerged due to flooding. Infrastructure damage, including collapsed houses and damaged power lines, has also been reported. The IMD predicts the cyclone will weaken upon landfall. Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant.
