**ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN** – Pakistani authorities arrested nearly 1,000 protesters following a large-scale demonstration in Islamabad demanding the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The clashes, which saw over 10,000 protesters clash with 20,000 security forces, resulted in the deaths of at least one police officer and four paramilitary personnel.
The protest, the largest in the capital since February’s elections, was called for by Khan himself from his prison cell. Led by his key lieutenant Ali Amin Gandapur and his wife Bushra Bibi, the protesters marched towards the city center, defying a government-imposed lockdown and a ban on public gatherings. They were eventually pushed back by security forces using tear gas and batons.
Islamabad Police Inspector General Ali Nasir Rizvi confirmed the arrest of 954 protesters between Sunday and Tuesday. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi lauded the security forces’ response, while the PTI announced the rally’s cancellation.
While Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the protests as extremism, calls for reconciliation are growing amidst concerns about the escalating tensions and their impact on the nation’s 240 million citizens. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan urged both Sharif and Khan’s parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to prevent further unrest.
The government’s response has drawn criticism for its heavy-handed tactics, including internet shutdowns, school closures, and roadblocks that disrupted daily life for many Islamabad residents. Amnesty International condemned the use of “unlawful and excessive force” by law enforcement.
Khan, a hugely popular figure, was removed from office in 2022 and is currently facing numerous legal challenges. His party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured the most seats in the recent elections but was excluded from power, fueling further accusations of election rigging and sparking widespread protests. Analysts point to the military establishment’s influence in Pakistani politics as a key factor in the ongoing turmoil. The situation, described by experts as a worsening confrontation with no clear winners, highlights the deep political divisions currently plaguing Pakistan.
